Generative Type Mandala
After Effects Expressions
0% Keyframes. 100% Code.
A radical experiment in automation and procedural design. This project pushes Adobe After Effects to its absolute limits by removing the animator’s most fundamental tool: the keyframe.
It is a fully generative template where a single text input drives the entire visual system. By typing a name or word, the project generates a unique, complex «mandala» animation—colors, patterns, and movement—calculated entirely through code.
Throughout my career specializing in Motion Graphics, I have always sought to master the «why» and «how» behind the software. This personal project was a challenge to banish the timeline and rely solely on After Effects Expressions. The concept was to build a reactive design engine where the visual output is directly dependent on the user’s input data (text characters), creating a personalized visual identity instantly.
The challenge was purely mathematical and logical. Zero keyframes were used. I had to translate character data (such as string length or index) into visual parameters like rotation, scale, and hue. Creating organic, fluid motion using only rigid code required complex math (trigonometry, sine waves, and time-based calculations) to replicate the natural feel of manual animation without touching the timeline.
My goal was to explore the boundaries of Creative Coding within a design tool. I wanted to prove that design could be «systematized.» The objective was to create a «living» asset that adapts to the user rather than a static pre-render. It serves as a study in efficiency, demonstrating how scripting can automate complex tasks and generate infinite variations from a single master setup.
The result is a mesmerizing, self-generating animation system. It stands as a testament to deep technical proficiency, proving that I can build custom tools and solutions «under the hood.» It bridges the gap between traditional motion graphics and generative art, showcasing a level of control that goes far beyond standard animation techniques.
